Karen McEvoy Shields, C.N.M., M.S.N.

Karen_McEvoy_Shields_CNM_2015Karen has more than 20 years of experience supporting women emotionally, physically and spiritually to give birth naturally. She founded Gentle Beginnings as a solo practice in 1995 and has since grown the practice to include three additional midwives. Karen earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rutgers University, as well as a Master of Science in Nursing and a certificate in Midwifery from the University of Pennsylvania. She has been on the graduate school faculty in the Midwifery Department at the University of Pennsylvania as an instructor of intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care, and continues to supervise midwifery students in the clinical setting. Karen serves as a board member for the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, and is an officer of Family Health Initiatives. She also regularly participates in speaking events where she discusses women’s health issues and water birth.
